  • The new photovoltaic plant will have an annual production capacity of 24 GWh of electrical energy and will allow powering around 7 thousand homes, avoiding the emission of more than 6 thousand tons of CO2 per year.
  • 13 MWp solar park with a total of 24 thousand bifacial panels is already under construction and is expected to start operating in 2022, occupying a gross area of ​​24 hectares, in Santa Bárbara de Nexe, in the municipality of Faro.
  • After legalizing the 17.5MWp Paderne plant near Albufeira, the partners reinforce their presence in the Algarve region through the next photovoltaic project, with the aim of reaching a total of 100MW of photovoltaic capacity in Portugal over the next years.

Génese Natural, a company operating in the field of renewable energy and sustainability, will invest 13 million euros in the construction and development of the Santa Bárbara de Nexe Photovoltaic Power plant in Faro, positioning itself as a producer of renewable electricity from solar. The project was presented today at the first stone launching event, on the terrain where the future power plant will be built. It was attended by the Mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, the representative of Génese Natural, Rogério da Ponte, and Director of Asunim, Andreas Schuenhoff.

The representative of Génese Natural, Rogério da Ponte, believes that the investment made in the Santa Bárbara de Nexe Photovoltaic Power Station is a very important step for the company, as it strengthens its presence in the Portuguese market. “This is one of several projects to produce renewable energy that we are developing in Portugal and will have a fundamental impact on the production of solar energy in the region of Faro, one of the best in terms of solar radiation in continental Europe. The construction of the new photovoltaic plant, which occupies a gross area of ​​​​about 24 hectares, is already underway and includes the installation of 13MWp, which corresponds to more than 24 thousand solar panels of 540Wp with bifacial cells, distributed over 14 hectares. Once connected to the grid, the photovoltaic park will have an annual production capacity of 24 GWh of electricity, which will allow it to supply 6,943 homes and avoid the emission of 6,093 tons of CO2 per year.

He continues that Génese Natural, in line with its environmental concerns, carefully manages to minimize the environmental impact that the Santa Bárbara de Nexe photovoltaic plant may have in the area in which it is located. In this sense, priority will be given to the preservation of a large protection area of up to 8ha, intended to maintain the existing biodiversity and the continuous natural corridors between the main areas of the photovoltaic park combined with permaculture vegetation management and zero pesticide use.

Andreas Schuenhoff, Director of asunim, which is also building, developing, and investing in several other national and foreign projects, argues that “Portugal has always had enormous potential in terms of solar energy production, not only due to its geographical characteristics, but also to the absence of national fossil resources”. He concludes: “Today there is increasing interest and investment in solar energy and sustainable development, which create value and local work. And we must reduce the import of fossil fuels and the country’s energy dependence, also countering climate change”.

The Mayor of Faro, Rogério Bacalhau, highlights: “The inauguration of this facility is of singular significance for the municipality of Faro, because it meets our policy of environmental sustainability and fits the objectives defined by this executive on renewable and environmentally friendly energy. In addition to being a sustainable and energy-intelligent solution, it is increasingly accessible and competitive, so it makes perfect sense to bet on the region of the country with the most hours of sunshine for the installation of a photovoltaic plant of this size and nature”. “It is with great satisfaction that I witness the maximization of a natural resource that belongs to everyone and that is placed at the service of all, without compromising future generations. Faro will always be available to host sustainable projects that allow us to grow without jeopardizing the environment and the well-being of our municipality and our citizens”, reiterates the mayor.

Elsewedy Electric T&D (EETD) were recently awarded for building 20MWp PV with 35MWh storage in Juba, South Sudan.

Asunim and I-kWh formed a consulting consortium supporting EETD to implement a large-scale PV system and provide renewable electricity to South Sudan. Both Asunim and I-kWh have extensive experience on their field, implementing well-performing PV systems and utility scale electricity storage systems.

The project will consist of a 20MWp solar photovoltaic park, a 35MWh battery storage system to serve the state of Jubek and the entire region. It will be one of the largest storage projects implemented in the African continent and a first for South Sudan, almost doubling total grid-connected electricity generating capacity of the young nation that is currently 100% dependent on Oil imports.

Asunim UAE, a subsidiary of well-known Asunim Group with 6 offices in different countries and a total track record of 1GW Solar provides project dimensioning, engineering, electrical project, product verification and on-site supervision services for this important milestone project in Sudan.

This project demonstrates yet again that solar is reliable and affordable in all parts of the world. With this project, EETD are targeting to provide electricity to the South Sudanese people of which 90% currently do not have access to electricity and to reduce the CO2 emissions of a heavily oil dependent country.

I-kWh managing director, Aaron Astley expressed: “The project in South Sudan will be a first for energy storage applications in the region and will set a new benchmark in terms of PV+Storage projects. We are excited to be working with great organisations such as EETD and Asunim to support the infrastructure development of South Sudan.” I-kWh will be bringing their expertise of energy storage and management systems to provide clean, reliable power to the city of Juba.

Mohamed Shiha, the Technical Director of EETD added that the estimated 29 million kWh of clean energy produced by the project will fulfil the energy needs of more than 59,000 South Sudanese homes. The project will avoid emissions of an annual 10,900 tons of CO2. 

The plant will be constructed on land near Nesitu County, which is 20km from the capital, Juba.

Importance of Accurate and High Quality EPC Service in Industrial Roofs






Umut Gürbüz, Asunim founding partner, took part in the special session of GENSED, attended by more than 200 participants on the 2nd day of the 12th International Energy Congress and Fair.

In the session, Mr. Gürbüz emphasized the importance of SPP in industrial roofs and how to make quality and correct EPCs on roofs. “Rooftop solar systems require experience, are more difficult than ground mounted solar systems in many areas, especially in design and installation. As a company with extensive international experience in the field of rooftop solar systems, we offer tailor-made solutions for roofs of all types and challenges.”

Mr. Gürbüz also said, “With the recent increase in electricity prices, the costs of photovoltaic systems decreased. Thus, industrialists reached the point of producing for self consumption at very attractive prices. The industrialist can install a solar power plant on the roof of the plant and reduce its monthly consumption from monthly production, and if the monthly production is too high, it can generate additional income by selling this excess electricity to the grid.”

Mr. Gürbüz talked about the standards that must be followed in the whole process from design to installation, testing and maintenance of photovoltaic systems, he also mentioned occupational health and safety issues.
